Dell runs out of low-end Intel CPUs
DELL IS KNOWN for unexciting boxes, Linux PCs and supply chain whip cracking. For the last few years, it was synonymous with the term efficient supply chain, so it is quite a shock to see it fall flat. The story started with a client of mine ordering three laptops from Dell, HP was off the list due to unrepentant corporate malfeasance. The parts were nothing special, Latitude D520s with a Core Nu...when it got weird, they were told Dell was out of CPUs, they had one, so that is why they got one laptop. To make matters more curious, they said there was no ETA on the CPUs coming in, and until they did, no laptop.
It looked like the much ballyhooed fumbles of last year might be making a comeback. The CPUs in question seem to be available at the other sites I checked, so why not at Dell?
I like laptops mainly
Due to the size and portability. Also, less wires and things to deal with and less power consumption.
But it really does depend on what you'll use it for. You'll have to shell out tons of $$ for a laptop that'll play the latest games and things, but if you just do web surfing, normal office and finance programs and music stuff, a laptop is just fine.
Laptop do cost more to upgrade, and are more prone to breaking, but I feel the advantages offer far outweigh putting a huge bulky ugly desktop in my living room.
I personally like the IBM T41 laptop as well as the G4 PowerBooks (Apple).
Just get something that fits what you need, not something that has tons of features you'll never use. Hell, I'd also suggest buying one used to most people I know.
Here are the differences
1) exclusivity. aboard the concorde, you were exceedingly aware of the fact that you were not flying people's express. it was a distinctly refined segment, mostly business and finance, some family and rich individuals. service personnel behaved in a way that reflected their understanding of this.
2) it cost a lot more.
3) the cabin was cramped. in terms of space it was not luxurious....vernment and business expense accounts so that people who had no economic justification for taking it could say, "i took the concorde." in my opinion, only a tiny fraction of this segment was ultra rich doing it simply because it was the most expensive way to go. after all, those folks have the means for their own planes, and the time to spend in first class on a 747 where it's more comfortable.
